ISO 45001: The new international standard

As it is announced by the ISO Committee ISO/PC 283 – Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems of the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO), ISO 45001 will replace other occupational health and safety standards such as OHSAS 18001 as the world’s most recognised occupational health and safety management systems standard as well as AS/NZS 4801 as an Australian/New Zealand standard.

The ISO 45001 will be published in 2016 based on the High Level Structure (HLS) and aligned with the ISO 9001, quality management system and ISO 14001, environmental management system standards that are supposed to be published in September 2017.

  1. Scope
  2. Normative references
  3. Terms and definitions
  4. Context of the organisation
  5. Leadership
  6. Planning
  7. Support
  8. Operations
  9. Performance evaluation
  10. Improvement

The choice between the OHSAS 18001 and AS/NZ 4801 is completely up to the company, which is garnering certification, and both are recognised equally within Australia. Both standards have the same aim in looking to eliminate injury and illness in the workplace.

With few differences between these two standards, development of a safety management system for one of the standards does not require much more in the way of specificity for certification to the other standards. Many organisations will look to certify to both standards – they are that similar.
